Artisanship & Materials

Every Heir Apparent piece is individually constructed by hand in small quantities, with an emphasis on thoughtful composition, quality materials, and attention to detail.

From the placement of gemstones to the finishing of chains, clasps, and findings, each design passes through our hands from beginning to end. This allows us to approach jewelry differently from mass production by making present choices along the way. The character of the materials themselves assist in the final design. Natural gemstones are just that, natural. Subtle variations in color, shape, texture, and inclusions are part of what makes them beautiful. No two pieces will ever be exactly alike.

“It’s always so magical how a single element can direct a design. Stones that are alive with vibrancy, an unexpected color combination, the particular luster of a pearl. Often, that’s where some of the most stunning pieces begin.” - Julie Vanderhorn, Founder + Creative Lead

Our gemstones, pearls, metals, chains, and findings are thoughtfully sourced from trusted specialty suppliers and selected for their quality, color, character, and longevity. We seek out natural gemstones with exceptional beauty and personality, such as luminous opals and moonstones, rich gradients of carnelian and tourmaline, chalcedony like Caribbean aqua blue waters, and many more that make up our magnificent palette of inspiration.

Choosing gold-filled vs. gold plated: an important distinction

Gold-filled jewelry is sometimes confused with gold-plated, but there is a noteworthy difference.

Gold-filled materials such as chain, clasps, and pendants, are made by permanently bonding a substantial layer of genuine gold to a base metal. In 1/20 gold-filled material, gold accounts for 5% of the total metal weight, significantly more than the thin surface layer used in conventional gold plating.

That difference matters. Gold-filled jewelry offers greater durability and longevity than traditional gold plating while providing the beauty and richness of genuine gold at a more accessible price than solid gold.

With proper care, gold-filled jewelry can retain its beautiful finish for many years, which is why we choose to work with it whenever possible.

“There is an inherent individuality in jewelry made this way. Natural gemstones, chains, and findings bring their own variations and character; the hand of the artisan brings another. The result is jewelry that should never feel common or interchangeable, but distinctly personal. I love creating pieces that feel as though they were made especially for you. Most importantly, they should bring you joy.” - Julie V.
